07 January 2025

On 10 December 2024, the INNOV-8-2-CREATE Impact Accelerator Programme reached its grand finale, celebrating the culmination of months of collaborative learning and innovation. The programme brought together researchers to refine their skills in translating groundbreaking ideas into impactful solutions. The programme, a collaborative initiative between Galway University, the University of Turin, and Riga Technical University, showcased the potential of research translation and innovation through a highly competitive accelerator process. Today, we celebrate the winners—Ciaran McGrory, Amrutha Varshini, Omnia Zayed, Francesca McDonagh, Valentina Proserpio, and Raimonds Jurgelis—each of whom brought unique perspectives and solutions to the programme.

Best Overall Pitch and Best Commercial Opportunity: Ciaran McGrory

Ciaran McGrory of Galway University emerged as the standout participant of the INNOV-8-2-CREATE programme, winning both the Best Overall Pitch and Best Commercial Opportunity awards. Introduced to the programme by his supervisor, Ciaran saw it as an invaluable opportunity to enhance his skills in project management, grant applications, and intellectual property—critical areas for his future career.

One of Ciaran’s biggest challenges was crafting analogies to simplify complex chemistry concepts for a diverse audience while keeping them engaged. “I wanted to make sure everyone in the room could relate to the concepts, even if they didn’t have a background in chemistry,” he explained. Through mentorship and his own perseverance, Ciaran delivered a pitch that impressed both judges and peers.

For Ciaran, the programme provided many highlights, including a deeper understanding of the patent application process. “Hearing real-life examples from experts made the process feel tangible and achievable,” he shared. Additionally, mentorship from Fionnuala Brown and insights into research translation broadened his professional perspective. “This programme has definitely impacted me professionally,” he reflected, noting his growth in skills such as market research, project management, and grant writing. Looking ahead, Ciaran plans to finalise his project, secure a patent, and collaborate with companies to manufacture and distribute his innovative product.

Celebrating Excellence Across the Programme

While Galway University had an exceptional showing, the INNOV-8-2-CREATE programme celebrated outstanding winners from its partner universities as well. Valentina Proserpio from the University of Turin earned recognition for her innovative solutions for Vulvodynia, a chronic pain in the vulva. Her project addressed a critical global challenge, demonstrating creativity and a commitment to real-world impact.

From Riga Technical University, Raimonds Jurgelis presented Bruntor, a project aimed at redefining portable furniture solutions with innovative design and functionality, bridging the gap between research and practical application. His work bridged innovative research and practical application, paving the way for impactful advancements in his field. Raimonds credited the programme for providing the resources and guidance needed to translate his ideas into actionable solutions.

Galway University also celebrated multiple participants. Amrutha Varshini, recognised as Best Presenter, shared her journey of translating complex scientific ideas into engaging and accessible presentations. “One major challenge I faced while preparing my pitch was figuring out how to engage my target audience—the implant industry—in what I was developing. Another challenge was presenting the scientific aspects of my technology without relying on technical jargon.” “The programme clarified my sense of purpose and boosted my confidence in translating technology from lab to market,” she reflected.

Alongside Amrutha, Omnia Zayed earned the “One to Watch” award in the ICT category for her innovative project that demonstrated immense potential for impact in the tech sector. Francesca McDonagh received the “One to Watch” award in the Life Sciences category, recognised for her outstanding contributions and forward-thinking approach in addressing challenges within her field.

Together, these winners exemplify the diverse talent and creativity fostered by the INNOV-8-2-CREATE programme, showcasing how collaborative efforts across universities can lead to impactful solutions.
